I took my 5 month old for her first one on Monday. She was smiling the whole time we were doing bouncy bouncy games on the water and ‘up in the air’.
The instructor took her underwater for a brief moment and she coughed a bit when she came back up but she was ok. We’re going to be saying the same words to her every session before she goes under so eventually she’ll associate those words with holding her breath.
It was a great experience for both of us.
I’ve taken two different kids– one was 18 mos, one was 21 mos. In both cases I was in the water with the baby, holding him. If your son already loves the pool you have a great start! The teacher won’t push you to dunk him under water until he is ready. They will have a lot of fun pool toys, games and songs. It should be fun. But my advice is– if he cries the entire time for 2 times in a row, don’t go back for a while. It’s not worth your money, since unless you keep up with lessons (all the time) he will forget what he’s learned. The 18-mo-old screamed the entire time and I felt terrible for him, because it’s natural for people to be afraid of things that are dangerous. The 21-mo-old cried a little at first and then he loved it, shouting out “simming cass??” when I got to work in the morning!
